My Lover and Friend

There was never a sudden, wild passion,
Like a storm that's for a moment, and is past;
But, slowly, and just as surely, it came.
A quiet, tender love that will last.

Neither of us knew its beginning.
But, of one thing we're sure; there's no end.
She is not only my wife and my lover,
But alas, my most treasured friend.

Life's trail is often quite rocky
And often, I find it not wide.
But, no matter how narrow the pathway,
She always finds room by my side.

So often we meet disappointments,
But, of this I most certainly am sure;
No matter how rugged life's pathway,
A love of this kind will endure.
